On May 18th Bob and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary! To celebrate, we’re taking a couple of weeks off and heading back to the Pacific Northwest. We’re starting with a cruise to Alaska (Coerced by the Cruise Monkey again!) Neither of us has ever been to Alaska, so we thought it would an interesting destination and also give us a chance to spend some time afterwards in the Seattle area.

We were actually at sea for our 1st anniversary, so it will be especially nice to be able to celebrate our 30th at sea too.

We’ll try and keep the blog up-to-date on our trip, however as we learned on our last adventure, this is not always easy to do! Internet connectivity is both limited and expensive on board ship, but we’ll do our best to keep on top of it.

We’re very excited and can’t wait to share our photos and journaling with you!

Wednesday May 20 - Cruising Glacier Bay

Today we cruised Glacier Bay National Park. We were one of only two cruise ships allowed that day. Again we had GREAT weather: it was chilly but gorgeous!

Approaching Glacier Bay

We finally get to use our cold weather clothes!

The dark parts are rock and debris mixed with the ice that have been pushed forward as the glacier advances.

Margerie Glacier

The noise the glacier makes sounds like thunder, it's so loud. We actually got to see the glacier "calving", which is when big chunks break off into the water.

Our path cutting through the ice.
The picture of our path through the ice was taken from deck 15, pretty high above the surface. All of the ice looks small but is actually quite large -- and only 10% is visible (the other 90% is below the surface). There was so much ice that it slowed us down by an hour.

After leaving Glacier Bay, the rest of the day was cruising south to Ketchikan.  More chillin' for us! We had a relaxing evening watching a magic show after dinner, and then drinks in the Wheelhouse Lounge with a jazz quartet.
